Hydrangea Heaven....

163356237_6a688dac5d

This beautiful snap is compliments of flickr

It's that time of the year here in the Northeast when one of my favorite bushes is in bloom! Hydrangeas are soooo heavenly here. The closer you get to the ocean the more vivid the blooms it seems. I've done some good research on how to change the color of  hydrangea blooms & thought I would share with all of you~Enjoy the photos of the summer's prettiest blossoms! xo

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeawhite2

Here are some tips for changing the color of  these scrumptious blossoms~:)

Changing Blooms To Pink~

For hydrangea blooms to be pink, the plants must not take up aluminum from the soil. If the soil naturally contains aluminum, one must try to keep it away from the hydrangea's system. Following are a few tricks that might work:

  • Add dolomitic lime several times a year. This will help to raise the pH. Shoot for a pH of about 6.0 to 6.2 (If it goes above 6.4 hydrangeas may experience an iron deficiency). Since hydrangeas take up aluminum best at lower pH levels, raising the pH will help to keep the bluing effect of aluminum out of the hydrangea's system.

  • Use a fertilizer with high levels of phosphorus. Phosphorus helps to prevent aluminum from creeping into the system of the hydrangea. Choose a fertilizer close to the ratio of 25/10/10 (Phosphorus is the middle number).

  • In areas that naturally produce blue hydrangeas (soils with aluminum), consider growing pink hydrangeas in large pots. If hydrangeas are grown in pots, it would be best to use soil-less mixtures, since these mixes would probably not have aluminum in them. In a pot, it will be much easier to control the requirements for growing pink hydrangeas.

Changing Blooms To Blue~

To obtain a blue hydrangea, aluminum must be present in the soil. To ensure that aluminum is present, aluminum sulfate may be added to the soil around the hydrangeas.

Authorities recommend that a solution of 1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) aluminum sulfate per gallon of water be applied to plants (which are at least 2-3 years old) throughout the growing season. Important: Water plants well in advance of application and put solution on cautiously, as too much can burn the roots.

To make the aluminum available to the plant, the pH of the soil should be low (5.2-5.5). Adding aluminum sulfate will tend to lower the pH of the soil. Another method for lowering the pH is to add organic matter to the soil such as coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels, grass clippings etc.

If the soil naturally contains aluminum and is acid (low pH) the color of the hydrangea will automatically tend toward shades of blue and/or purple.

The choice of fertilzer will also affect the color change. A fertilizer low in phosphorus and high in potassium is helpful in producing a good blue color(25/5/30 is good. Potassium is the last number). Superphosphates and bone meal should be avoided when trying to produce blue.

After stating this with much certainty, I hasten to add that it is virtually impossible to turn a hydrangea blue for any length of time if it is
planted in soil with no aluminum and that is highly alkaline (chalky). One would have to be very diligent in keeping the soil properly conditioned as stated above.

Perhaps the best idea for growing blue hydrangeas in an area with alkaline soil would be to grow them in very large pots using lots of compost to bring the pH down. The above suggestions for bluing would also work for a potted plant. Reduce the strength of the Aluminum sulfate to 1/4 oz per gallon of water. In a pot, it will be much easier to control the requirements for bluing.

TGIS!!!!

Yes~Thank God it's summer! I've been waiting patiently (well okay not so patiently!) for months  & it's finally here!  I live for the summer. For the flowers I plant for myself as well as garden clients, for weekends at the beach house working in the yard or lounging at the beach with family & friends, & the sound of crickets at night! I'm a sun loving, warm weather loving girl & this is the absolute BEST time of the year for me! Hubby loves that he can play golf a lot & enjoy the beach cottage along with his "it's five o'clock somewhere" mentality all summer long! So glad to be back blogging & trying hard to sit still & catch up on all my favorite blogs! I've missed my blog friends! :)

Dolce & gabbanas

Time for a new pair of Jackie-O's! I'll be able to use these if the sun ever comes out! Nasty, dismal weather most of May & June here! :(

Taking A Break....

Hanging basket

The days are flying & life is getting busier than usual! The beach house needs to be opened up for the season & garden customers have me working like crazy almost every day for hours! I love it though, it truly is my passion! The grandkids need to be taken to tennis lessons & baseball games so I'm taking a bit of a blog break. I'll miss you all & will try to sit for a bit here & there and catch up on all your blogs. I will be back with pretty garden photos when things calm down & I have a few minutes to snap photos! Have a wonderful memorial day weekend & remember to give thanks for those who have served our country with courage~ see you soon! xo :)

Crazy Planting....

Phlox blue moon

Phlox Blue Moon

I'm off & runnning with a very busy garden season! Seems as though here in the northeast it's winter & then all of a sudden summer. Where did the springs go? anywho....busy, busy busy & trying to get everyone designed & planted before memorial day with my eyes on the night temps, just in case we have a frost & all my pretty plantings are cold & half dead! It's a crap shoot every year trying to get everything done for the first holiday of the warmer weather, but throwing caution to the wind with the sometimes really cold nights! Here are some of my fav perennials that I am planting like a mad woman, along with pretty annuals that just keep the colors going all season. Do you love these pretty blooms as well? what are your favorites? tell me! Off to bed for a 5am wake up call! LOL! Have a wonderful week & get your hands dirty(or your garden gloves) planting! xo

Monday Inspiration....

White%20Tulips

It's been a while since blogging. Vacation & trying to get back in the swing have tied me up for a bit. That & some much needed spring cleaning plus meeting with garden clients have made the days fly! Getting much more streamlined & basic in my decorating (especially for the warmer months) have me replacing needlepoint rugs with sisal & coir & going white on white to look clean & crisp for the summer. I'm back at it again with changing all the bedding & rugs in my bedroom today to pale blues & crisp whites~My camera is taking photos very grainy so until I figure out the problem (just a simple switch on it I'm sure) I'll post photos of the summer re-do. For now these wonderful flickr snaps are my monday inspiration~enjoy! xo

West Palming It....

West-Palm-Beach-1024x768

Writing this from gorgeous & I do mean gorgeous West Palm Beach, Florida where we've been staying since last thursday. The weather has been picture perfect & I am getting brown as a berry & will definately need a face lift in 10 years!LOL! I adore the sun & I know the harm it can do but...hopefully my Italian will kick in & keep the wrinkles at bay for a bit! We've been down ocean drive so much I think I saw "the donald" taking out the trash at Mar-a-lago! LOL! SO many beautiful beaches & homes. We are staying in the fabulous home of a dear family friend right on the inter-coastal & the lights at night across the water are breathtaking. I could live here...hubby, not so sure. He likes the seasons, I'm sooo tired of the long winters couped up! Went to my favorite shopping district yesterday & I spent two hours in The Mackenzie-Childs  store on Worth Avenue & bought an adorable rug for the kitchen, a pretty pillow, tassels & a fabulous ceramic pot for blooms! Just walking in to this store put a smile on my face-it's so happy & magical!  I didn't even want to tease myself by going into Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton etc. so I just window shopped. I did make it into Tiffany & co. & saw a few things that would be wonderful for mothers day. I dropped a lot of hints! The screen on my camera decided to poop out & I'm not even stressing about taking photos this time. We are just relaxing, eating well & enjoying the beautiful beaches & all there is to do here. It's been such a welcome break & get-a-way~I always say the best part of any vacation is coming home no matter how wonderful the vacation destination is! I'll be back on Friday~see you then! x0

My cover use

Please indulge me a bit for being SO excited about my debut in my favorite decorating magazine! My backyard gardens were featured in the latest edition of Romantic Country & I am so very thrilled to be there among all the other talented homes & gardens featured in this gorgeous edition! Huge thanks to fifi & company for making the shoot so much fun & for Dan Mayers making my gardens really come to life on the pages of  this beautiful magazine! I have never looked at magazine photos the same way since watching Dan & his assistant Chitzu work at taking just the right shots with lighting, staging etc. I so am honored to be included in this edition!

Okay...the white toast thingy.... Had the stomach bug from hell this past week. For the past two months I've been trying to shed the post knee surgery weight I gained & eliminated all white flour & sugar. I'm happy to say the weight fell off & in two months time I am down 20lbs & back into my small sizes once again (I gained 15 lbs after surgery) I am now so into whole grains & lean protein that I think it will just stick for life now (hopefully.) Okay..so the stomach bug hits & I can't even eat for the whole day after & when I do all I can think of is white toast (preferably wonder bread) with a smidge of butter & a giant gob of strawberry jam. It's all I want to eat & if I remember correctly...it's what our moms gave us whenever we were to sick to eat , along with a nice hot cup of tea. The thing I have sworn off of had become the one thing I wanted to feel better. I indulged & felt 90% better & even had a few servings throughout the day. I don't know if the memories of childhood & moms cures got to me or if the white toast was really a magical elixir. All I know is that I feel better & won't feel guilty if I indulge in a little white toast from now on!

Talented Friends & First Blooms....

Jens tags

I just had to blog about the gorgeous BON APETIT place cards & tags (complete with their own little embellished bag) I purchased from my friend Jennifer Cotter. These are just perfect for a luncheon, dinner party or the holidays! Take a peek at Jen's gorgeous things in her beautiful shop.

Sooo happy to see the frist blooms of the season! I must admit though, I planted my pansies a bit too early & they looked like they needed the funeral home last week. After some rain & warmer weather they have revived & are looking awesome! :)

Pansy

My front door is all painted & now sports a heavenly shade of lavender! It works so well with the cape cod gray(which is really a beige) stain & pale blue shutters. I couldn't even bring myself to show you the awful shade of neon lavender I originally painted it lol! All is well & spring is in the air! Have a beautiful rest of the week my friends!
